Ethiopia has commissioned the trial production of electricity at the $1.8 billion Gilgel Gibe III hydro plant on the River Omo, the EastAfrican reported last week. 2015-12-01 · The Gibe III project added much-needed capacity to the country’s total installed 2.3-GW base. By 2037, Ethiopia aspires to have a total capacity of 37 GW (a 1,500% increase) and become a major Az etióp fővárostól, Addisz-Abebától délnyugatra, az Omo folyón létesült Afrika legnagyobb villamos erőműve, a Gilgel Gibe-III, amelynek völgyzárógátja egy hatalmas, 250 méter magas és 630 méter hosszú betonszerkezet. 2012-06-19 2017-09-26 The Gibe III prime contractor’s level of previous experience with dam projects the size of Gibe III, and the contractor’s inclination to perform pre-construction engineering studies (as evidenced by the interruption of work at Gibe II due to a failure to adequately perform pre-construction geological testing) underscores the importance of examining whether and how residual strength was Descending from the central Ethiopian plateau, the Omo River meanders across the country's parched southwest before spilling into Kenya’s Lake Turkana, the world's largest desert lake. The Omo is a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of indigenous farmers, herders and fishermen, who depend on its nourishing floods to sustain their most reliable sources of food. But the Gibe III Dam, now being The saga of Gibe III Dam is just the latest episode of human pressures contributing to the dying of Africa’s biggest lakes. Lake Chad has nearly disappeared from diversions that stopped its flow, and Lake Victoria has seen major drops in its water levels from dams that let too much water out. A massive hydro-electric dam, Gibe III, has now been built on the Omo river in order to support vast commercial plantations that are forcing the tribes from their land.

The project foresees a 50 m high gravity dam, with a crest length of 140 m. The Gibe III dam, 200 kms upstream, will interrupt the river’s natural flow and deprive thousands of tribespeople of their most valuable agricultural land by stopping the annual flood.

Gibe III is the third hydropower plant on the Omo River, what they’re calling a hydroelectric cascade. The Omo River has a unique geo-political dynamic. The river is entirely contained within Ethiopia’s borders. However, the river empties into Lake Turkana, which lies almost entirely within neighboring Kenya to the south.

The Gilgel Gibe II Hydropower Project is the second of the three plants included in the Gibe – Omo cascade and it is located some 250 km south- west of Addis Ababa and 80 Km north-east of Jima. The project foresees a 50 m high gravity dam, with a crest length of 140 m.
